Step into the SABIAN Vault - that large, temperature controlled center for cymbal design and testing at our Meductic plant - and Kevin Laskey is there, seated behind a rack of cymbals just to the right of the entrance. An experienced pro drummer who toured with the blues rock band Doublecross, Kevin has been a member of our famed Vault Team, specializing in cymbal testing and selection, since 1999.
Right from the start, my focus has been sound... sound is what matters most," he says, slicing his stick across an O-Zone Crash that resonates on this finger. Kevin tests cymbals when they come into the Vault, fresh from the final stages of lathing (cutting the tonal grooves into the surface) and edging (trimming the cymbal to its final size).
"I check each batch to ensure the cymbals are of the correct weight and sound. The good ones go on the shelves to age and mature their sound. Any that I question are tested by a couple of the other guys, because sometimes a cymbal will sound a little different but still be great."
In addition to checking cymbals on the way into the Vault, he checks them on the way out. But what is his key criterion? "If it's not good enough for me, it's not good enough for anyone."
Does Kevin have any favorite cymbals? "Oh, it's the HHX Evolution Crash. I like dark tones, and this model sounds great at every volume."
Having grown up listening to Kiss, Motley Crue, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, Kevin cites his current drumming influences as Nickelback?s Daniel Adair, Chad Smith of the Chili Peppers, and Eric Paul with Thornley. "I like a good tune with a solid groove," he says as he pulls another O-Zone off the rack and gives it a whack. "Oh, this is nice... "
